Good Enough

Good Enough

Satisficers are people who make a decision or take action once their criteria are met. This doesn’t mean they settle for things, but as soon as they find the product (hotel, car, or pasta sauce) that has the qualities they want they’re satisfied.

Maximisers want to make the optimal decision. So even if they see something that meets their requirements, they can’t make a decision until they’ve examined every option, so they know they are making the best possible choice.

Satisficing has been shown to lead to happiness and satisfaction, but maximising is associated with perfectionism, stress, frustration, and being frequently dissatisfied. Even after making their decision Maximisers often experience anxiety that they haven’t made the ‘best’ decision.

When making choices, try to identify some ways to increase satisficing, or getting that ‘good enough’ feeling in your life.
